SEEKING

Singer/Actors for a new musical about Chinese workers on the Continental railroad in the 1860s. (See breakdown.) No roles will be understudied.

Please note that while the majority of the characters are Chinese, actors of all Asian, Asian-American, or Pacific Islander identities are encouraged to submit.

All stage managers have been hired for this production.

Production will start rehearsals at USF in Cedar City, UT. Performances will be held at the West Valley Performing Arts Center in West Valley, UT (near Salt Lake City).

If you elect to do a song of your own choosing, please submit a brief musical theatre song that has drive and is actable. For those auditioning for the role of “Hagan” (a non-singing role), please submit a short dramatic monologue.

AUDITION SELF-TAPE GUIDELINES:
1. Please SLATE at the beginning of your tape. State your full name, and representation if you have it.

2. Please FRAME from the top of your head to just below your shoulder.

3. It would be helpful to tape in a quiet room with little or no background noise with the most advantageous lighting you can manage. We understand that times are challenging right now, so do the best you can.




Yook Mei (LEAD), a Chinese woman: 20s, legit lyrical soprano. A young, intelligent woman, wise beyond her years. Cynicism melts away as she unexpectedly finds love and her destiny. Female-identifying.

Lit (Guan Lit Ning) (LEAD): A Chinese railroad worker. 20s, lyric tenor with a strong A4, young leading man with wide emotional range. Good son, naive, and impulsive. Physically agile and quick. Grows into manhood. Male-identifying.

Jiang, the foreman and leader: A Chinese railroad worker. 30s, bass down to an E2, alpha male who’s grounded, confident, and charismatic. Male-identifying.

Chu, a scholar: A Chinese railroad worker. 20s to 30s, lyric tenor, acts as interpreter, slightly nerdy, smart and very practical. Male identifying.

Wong, the resident cynic: A Chinese railroad worker. 30s, baritone, smart ass and truth teller. Outwardly cynical but cares deeply about community. Male-identifying.

Guan Ming Chong (“Ba” or “Ba-ba” to his son, Lit): A Chinese railroad worker. 40s to 50s, baritone. Dignified, loving father with strong traditional Confucian values. Male identifying.

Loong, an opera artist/teacher: A Chinese railroad worker. 30s to 40s, bari/tenor, good with text, classical acting background helpful. Diva and legend in his own mind; devoted deeply to his art. Unforgiving taskmaster to his pupil, Lo. Male identifying.

Lo, Loong’s protege and pupil: A Chinese railroad worker. 20s to 30s, comic tenor with strong falsetto (for Chinese opera). Enthusiastic, clumsy (at first), grown from “ugly duckling” to swan. Male identifying.

Other Chinese railroad workers: 4 singers/actors. 20s to 40s. All types, all vocal ranges and personalities. Male-identifying.

Hagan, Irish-American/Irish immigrant foreman and boss: Any age, good natured with a sense of humor. Just a guy doing his job. Non-singing role. Male identifying.
