JACQUES CORNET
African-American male. Mid 20s - 30s. Seeking an actor with a larger-than-life sensibility. Great comic assets. Physically svelte, athletic and agile. An actor with a broad, emotional range. Cornet is witty. Self-absorbed fop without the effeminacy. Possesses a brush of pomposity and pretension. Obsessed with self-image and brocade. A flamboyant, ladies’ man with an insatiable sexual appetite and a revered
endowment. Married men of New Orleans resent his riches. Cornet is a free slave pursued actively by New Orleans’ society for his liberal patronage. He pays handsomely anyone who can provide maps and proof of a direct passage from the Mississippi to the coast of California leading then to the silk producing coasts of Asia (he must have his linen and silk finery delivered in haste). Fancies himself a keen observer but he is blinded to the plights and worries of lesser men by his own indulgences. Eventually he discovers his folly. He is a man seeking acceptance but his wealth and fancies cannot buy him honest respect, nor true freedom. Stage combat (fencing/sword play) involved
