In regard to the character descriptions – they outline the characters as described in the script and in consultation with the creative team. They do not aim to be all-encompassing representations of who might fill these roles. We aim for an expansive and deliberate casting process. We acknowledge that the characters in the script are traditionally presented as either male or female (using he/him or she/her pronouns). We warmly welcome submissions from individuals who identify as gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, or non-binary for the roles that resonate most with their identity.
SEEKING:
LEADING PLAYER: (Any Gender, Any Age), Commanding and seductive, exuding a warmth that feels like an exclusive invitation. Masterfully charming and manipulative, the Leading Player is our invitation to fulfillment and offers a place for everyone to belong. Guides Pippin through discovering his “purpose”. Exceptional in many ways especially in dance and vocals and excels in charisma but is ultimately possessive. Vocal range: Db3-Ab4
PIPPIN: (Male/Masc, 20s+), Longing to find his purpose in life. Pensive, naive, innocent, and wandering. Truly lacking a place to belong and fit in. Eventually finds love, and purpose in life, with Catherine and Theo. Great dancer and vocalist. Vocal range: G2-Ab4
CHARLEMAGNE: (Male/Masc, 50s-60s), Pippin's demanding father and ultimate conqueror. As the King of the Holy Roman Empire, Charlemagne is more comfortable wielding a sword than breaking bread. An archetype of a ruler. He wears his years with great pride. Vocal range: G2-E4
LEWIS: (Male/Masc), Charlemagne and Fastrada’s son. Strong and self-involved. Pippin’s half-brother and after Pippin, heir to the throne. Addicted to the physical. Lewis loves weightlifting. Lewis loves wrestling, but most of all, Lewis loves Lewis. Excellent dancer as Lewis emerges from the players.
FASTRADA: (Female/Femme, late 30s-50s), Pippin's conniving and manipulative stepmother to Pippin. A seductress, who is no stranger to deceit and betrayal, she is smart, calculating and understands the power of sex. Also, an excellent dancer as she emerges from the players. Vocal range: A3-F5
BERTHE: (Female/Femme, mature, 60+), Pippin's saucy, charismatic, grandmother. A woman full of vigor, wisdom, grace, and sass. She understands the limit of time. She encourages Pippin to live his life to the fullest sexually. Good mover who can engage the audience. An example to show. Vocal range: E3-C5
CATHERINE: (Female/Femme, 20s-30s): A widow and mother. She is a natural, unassuming beauty, and a hopeless romantic, who possesses graceful elegance. Encounters Pippin at his lowest point and eventually falls in love with him. Vocal Range: F#3-Db5
THEO: (Male/Masc, Child, age 7-10), Catherine's son who is unapologetic, frank, and very real. He is not putting on an act.
ENSEMBLE/THE PLAYERS: A greek chorus of sorts of exceptional dancers and singers. They are enticing, seductive, and exceptional in many ways. Along with the Leading Player, they can morph and become all Pippin could desire, as well as offer him a place to belong. As an ensemble they appear “perfect”. Skills in acrobatics, circus, partnering and magic are a plus but not required.
