BREAKDOWN

EGG; OR ANYTHING DIPPED IN EGG GONE SOFTEN

Synopsis: A lovesick novelist arrives in New York City with a manuscript and a bad habit of choosing men who make him feel small. But when a game night forces him into the same room with his situationship and his gym crush, he must confront the unsettling truth that he might be bringing the poison to the party himself.

Note: This play is a romantic comedy and explores the spectrum of queerness. We invite the humor alongside the pain and the grief.

Note: All roles require comfort with movement.

SEEKING:

VIRGO

Character is an early-30s, gay, dark-skinned Black American man. Teacher/Novelist. An anxious, attractive, hyper-vigilant intellectual who shields his deep vulnerability with sharp philosophy and biting humor while quietly panicking over perceived rejection. He walks the world HIV+ undetectable.

Note: This role will require comfort with simulated sex and intimacy with another man, and nudity above the waist.

REESE

Character is a mid-30s, gay, Black American man. School Psychologist. A goofy, handsome, emerging tastemaker who hides massive commitment panic behind deflective charm and power-tripping control tactics.

Note: This role will require comfort with simulated sex and intimacy with another man, and nudity above the waist.

MERC/LEO

Character is an early-30s, bi, Black American or Afro-Latiné man. Actor & Uber Driver. A physically uninhibited, handsome, chaotic disruptor who uses effortless charm and a laid-back facade to completely evade emotional accountability. Loves using his privilege to his advantage.

Note: This role will require comfort with simulated sex and intimacy with another man, and nudity above the waist.

SUMMER

Character is a mid-30s, brown-skinned Black American woman. Nurse. Virgo's hyper-competent force-of-nature sister who weaponizes rapid-fire cynicism and deadpan, unhinged logic to mask deep marital rage and grief.

THOMAS

Character is a mid-30s, Black American man. Doctor. Summer's twitchy, overcompensating, meddling fiancé who uses modern therapy-speak to perform an enlightened persona that his anxious behavior constantly betrays.
