New play. Carrie Greenlea reviews live opera performances, skewering unsuspecting singers for everything from bad high notes to bad nose jobs. Her husband Norman reviews recordings and, having failed at a singing career himself, prefers to equivocate rather than hurt anyone's feelings. The cracks in their marriage and in their respective approaches to criticism are broken wide open when Stefano Donato, a mediocre Italian tenor whose career they have jointly ruined, insists on moving in with them.

Seeking:

Norman Greenlea:

30s. Opera critic. Intellectual, sensitive, equivocating. Marooned in a career and a marriage that don't quite suit him, he is liberated unexpectedly by an unfortunate turn of events.

Carrie Greenlea:

30s. Norman’s wife. Opera critic. Woman of strong opinions and high standards. Wields a razor-sharp pen. The more her desire for a baby is thwarted, the more she takes out her frustrations in her writing. Learns the hard way that true artistry is human, not divine.

Stefano Donato:

30s. Not-ready-for-prime-time, Italian-born tenor with an excellent command of English. Bent on revenge on the operatic scale, he ends up discovering his own inner critic. Some a cappella operatic singing required.

Francesca Donato:

20s. Stefano’s wife. Italian American. Naturally timid, but so fiercely devoted to her husband that when she fears she's losing him, she becomes daring, even reckless. A talented mimic.

Cedric West:

40s. Managing editor of “Opera World”. Dapper, effeminate, acerbic. Channels Bette Davis when social situations spin out of his control.
