CHEZ JOEY
THE CATS: “The Cats” are an ensemble of five highly skilled dancers and one female jazz singer who inhabit the world of Lucille’s and Chez Joey. They are the folks who hang out and do their thing at this very special club, where authenticity and creative flow are prized above all else. Each is a master at their craft, each has a mode of expression unique to them. They are all real “cats,” the highest praise Joey can give to an artist. ALL ENSEMBLE ROLES. MAY COVER PRINCIPALS.
5 DANCERS: Dancers of all forms and styles, of all ethnicities/genders (20s – 50s). Some will be expert tap dancers; however, we are also open to “cats” who have a distinctly individual style of movement.
A FEMALE JAZZ SINGER: Black. (40s – 70s) with a distinctive voice and a compelling personal style - someone accustomed to making her own mark in any situation. May cover the role of Lucille.
THE AMBROSIALS: (Early 20s – Mid 30s) Black. Female Presenting. “The Ambrosials” – Gladys, Tilda, Pearl, Ruby, & Betty - are the line of dancers at Lucille’s and later at Chez Joey. Gladys is the leader of the group but each of these women is fierce, both in their commitment to creation and in their devotion to Lucille. Each was picked by Lucille because she has unique gifts and unrealized potential. Each has her own story she could tell, a story of hardship and joy. Each has found an oasis under Lucille’s wing, where she is safe from the dangers outside the club and where she can express her artistry without inhibition. Outstanding movers (some will tap) with a willingness to throw themselves into the work without being taught specific steps or routines. We want creative thinkers. Also should be strong singers and actors with a comic flair. ALL ENSEMBLE ROLES. MAY COVER PRINCIPALS.
