BREAKDOWN
Storyline: Five souls in the afterlife who have lived many lives and will live many more look back on one shared existence from the middle of the 20th century, in which all five were wealthy, elite-educated, witty, intelligent and white—some famous, some not.
(NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT): Because they are souls and will not always be what they were in that existence, the five actors we see onstage are not a heterogenous group of white people—they are different races—some perhaps disabled and/or non-binary and/or trans and/or what might best present a picture of humanity itself.)
[MARY] (BIPOC, Mary, ages 15 to 43, she/her/hers) Mary is charming, incandescent, witty, truthful, brilliant and playful - our truly moral protagonist. We follow her from 15, maturing through losses and her role as a private citizen amongst famous friends. An artist with political questions. An independent thinker and fierce friend.
[JACK] (BIPOC, Jack ages 17 to 46, he/him/his) Jack is the wealthy, handsome, second son of a powerful Irish businessman. He is a charmer and a trickster with an underlying depth and complexity. He learns through loss and his encounters with Mary over decades to discover real strength and a capacity for courage.
[JACKIE] (Any race/ethnicity, Jackie ages 17 to 35, she/her/hers) Jackie is Jack’s brilliant, charming, and funny wife. She outwardly performs the duties of a housewife from the era but wishes for acknowledgement, friendships, and affairs of her own.
