Preparation
Prepare a brief standard song (Gershwin, Berlin, etc) in Tenor or Bari/tenor range (for men), in mezzo range (for Woman 1) and in Belt with head voice (for Woman 2)

Bring sheet music; accompanist provided.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together

SYNOPSIS: CAGNEY is a musical about the life of film legend James Cagney. He came from the mean streets of New York to become an accomplished “hoofer” and the cinema’s quintessential tough guy. This is an intimate portrait of the man, his art and his politics, his love of family and his enormous generosity.

CAGNEY: (CAST) ROBERT CREIGHTON

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING:

JACK WARNER
(40’s-50’s) This role is as central to this story as Cagney. Also briefly plays Commissioner Dies and Private McCrae. Bari-tenor with a strong F-sharp (negotiable). F is non-negotiable. Larger than life in charge studio head. Think Jerry Orbach in Chicago. No Dancing required.

For the following 4 actors we are seeking a multi-talented small ensemble to play many characters. These strong actors play a variety of both comic and dramatic roles. These actors must also be strong singers and advanced tap dancers.

BILL CAGNEY
(Man #1) (early 30’s - early 40’s)
Also plays Errol Flynn, SAG President, Mr. Thompson (Foreman), Gus Edwards (Novelty Performer), Bellboy (Vaudeville Circuit), Screenwriter (Filmography), Ed Woods, Senator, Camera Man ("White Heat"), Quartet ("Grand Old Flag"). Must be an accomplished tap dancer. Bari-tenor to an F.

BOB HOPE
(Man #2) (30’s/40’s)
Also plays Al Jolson, Yussie (Laborer), Keith’s Music Hall Stage Manager, Bellboy (Vaudeville Circuit), Screenwriter (Filmography), Senator, Director ("White Heat"), Director ("Public Enemy"), Quartet ("Grand Old Flag"). Must be an excellent tapper. Strong Tenor to a G (negotiable). An F-sharp is non-negotiable.

MA CAGNEY/JANE
Warner’s Secretary (Woman #1) ( MID 30’s – late 40’s)
Also plays Greta Garbo, Bellgirl (Vaudeville Circuit), Screenwriter (Filmography), Ma Cagney, Senator, Ma (White Heat), USO Performer, Quartet ("Grand Old Flag"). Must be an accomplished tapper. Strong belter with head voice. A mezzo soprano is fine.

WILLIE CAGNEY
(Woman #2) (early to late 30’s)
Also plays Bette Davis, Bellgirl (Vaudeville Circuit), Screenwriter (Filmography), Senator, Shirley Temple (in silhouette), Mae Clarke, Quartet ("Grand Old Flag"), Clapper Girl ("White Heat”). Must be an accomplished tapper. Very strong singer: mix to a D flat with a strong head voice above. Must be 5’5” or under.
