BREAKDOWN
EMCEE (Male) Age 25 – 40 Vocal Range – Middle C/High C#
The host at the Kit Kat Klub, he is comedic, clever, sarcastic, sensual, and mysterious. He acts as overseer and commentator of the world of the cabaret. Role requires agile stage movement and dance. German accent required. (Role requires actor to be comfortable with sexually suggestive movement, expression, costuming, and same sex intimacy.) (Role requires Full Nudity for the closing of Act One and closing moment of the play.)
SALLY BOWLES (Female) Age 20s to 30s Vocal Range – Low A/High C
The current star singer at the Kit Kat Klub. A British emigre, she is rather pretty, rather sophisticated, rather child-like, exasperating, and irresistible. At times she struggles with the darkness of her life as a cabaret performer. Role requires agile stage movement and dance. British accent required. (Role requires actor to be comfortable with sexually suggestive movement, expression, and costuming.)
CLIFFORD BRADSHAW (Male) Age late 20s/Mid-30s. Vocal Range – Low A/High E
An American novelist traveling to Berlin for inspiration, he is pleasant-looking, intelligent, and apparently reserved. He is struggling with the expression of his homosexual feelings. Will sing. (Role requires actor to be comfortable with same-sex intimacy.) (Role requires actor being in only his underwear in a scene with Bobby and Sally.)
FRAULEIN SCHNEIDER (Female) Age 50+ Vocal Range – Low D/Ab above middle C
A landlady who rents rooms in her large flat. Was rich, but has now fallen on hard times, she tries to adjust to the changing times and morés. Must be comfortable with stage movement and light dance – waltz. German accent required.
HERR SCHULTZ (Male) – Age Range 50+. Vocal Range – Low G/High F
One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers and the proprietor of a Fruit Shop. He is very warm and cheerful, with feelings for Fraulein Schneider. Must be comfortable with stage movement and light dance – waltz. German accent required.
ERNST LUDWIG (Male) Age to play 30s Vocal range flexible Age Range
A friendly and likable German, he befriends Clifford on the train. Must be comfortable with stage movement and light dance. Will sing in “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” and the chorus. German accent required.
FRAULEIN KOST (Female) Age Rang 25 – 30s Vocal Range – Low A flat/High F
Another of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers. She earns money by offering favors to sailors. Role requires agile stage movement and dance. German accent required. Will sings in German. Will also double as one of the Kit Kat Girls (Fritz.) (Role requires actor to be comfortable with sexually suggestive movement, expression, and costuming.)
KIT KAT GIRLS (Female) Age Range 20s to early 30s. Various Vocal Ranges
These women must be strong dancer/singers and will also be part of various scenes as performers and as club patrons. The ladies can be of various shapes and sizes – the key is to be comfortable with your femininity and scanty costumes that show off sex appeal. Features (“Two Ladies,” “Telephone Dance,” etc.) will be drawn from this group. Excellent dance skills required. (Roles require actors to be comfortable with sexually suggestive movement, expression, costuming, and same-sex intimacy.)
Kit Kat Boys (Male) age range – 20s to early 30s Various Vocal Ranges
These men must be strong singers and dancers to play waiters and patrons at the Kit Kat Klub in addition to various features roles. They should be comfortable with portraying free in gender depictions. Features (bobby, victor, “tomorrow belongs to me,” etc.) will be drawn from this group. Excellent dance skills required. (Roles require actors to be comfortable with sexually suggestive movement, expression, costuming, and same-sex intimacy.)
