BREAKDOWN

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

If you are using an iPhone to video record, please be sure to film horizontally and in a well-lit space (not backlit). At the top of the video, please slate your name and height.

Please prepare the track(s) and sides for the character you are auditioning for at https://www.marriotttheatre.com/audition/bigfish . If a reader is not accessible to you, you may perform a monologue in the style of the show or read only your character’s lines.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE: Big Fish is at once a rollicking downhome technicolor tall tale brought to life, and an intimate heartbreaking realistic story about a father and son. It navigates the tricky space that a father and son occupy through the course of a lifetime’s attempt at forging a meaningful relationship; past, present, and future. Edward Bloom’s fantastical, wonderous embellishment of his life’s story is at heart an attempt to connect with his son Will in a much more magical and profound way than the reality of his world will actually permit, or his own humanity comfortably allows. It is about a father genuinely wanting to share the wondrous possibilities of a life with his son in order to be the hero he thinks his son wants him to be.

A note about casting: (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Trarquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville): Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

Seeking:

All roles will be understudied.

Edward Bloom: Age: 35-60, will switch between a young teenager and father. (Bari-Tenor) (G2 - G4). Strong singer with loads of charm and empathy. Able to move well. An engaging and earnest storyteller, confident and bold, and yet desperate for validation in his son’s eyes. A romantic, a dreamer, an adventurer out to save the world. Deeply in love with his wife, desperately wanting the admiration of his son, and perpetually drawn by the wonder of his imagination.

Will: Age: late 20’s to mid 30’s. Tenor, range C#3 - G4. Movement skills not required but a plus. An earnest, serious, thoughtful young man wanting to reconnect with his storytelling father, as he prepares to become a father himself. Unable to appreciate Edward’s romantic view of life, he attempts to discover who his father really is. A successful professional newsman and new husband. He takes us on a journey to understand the complex relationship between a father and son, complete with a final heartfelt embrace of his father’s legacy. Serious emotional availability.

Young Will/Will’s Son: Age: 8-12. Singing and movement a plus but not required. Curious and intelligent, questioning, and self-assured. Little man in a boy’s body. Edward describes him as being born a middle-aged man.

Sandra: Age: mid-30’s to early 50’s. Soprano w/Mix Belt. Vocal range: G3 - E5. Has a rich singing voice, dances in past scenes. Idyllic and alluring, southern charm with an innocence and gentle, playful strength. Deeply empathetic and caring.

Josephine: Age: mid-20's to mid 30’s. Mix/Belt up to C#5. No solo singing. May dance in the ensemble. Will’s wife. Successful adult, sweet, intelligent, and deeply in love with Will. She’s charmed by Edward’s stories and works to be a bridge between Will and his father, justifying the deeper meaning of the stories. Serious emotional life.

Karl, the Giant: Age: 20’s-40’s. Ability to walk on stilts a strong plus. Vocal range: A3 - D5. Bass. Edward’s best friend. Karl is shy, exceptionally intelligent, hermit- like, and has a quiet charisma. He has a booming voice and large personality. Tall and agile.

Amos Calloway: Age: 30’s-60’s. Vocal range: C3- F5 (touches G5). Character singing voice. Adult male, eccentric, quirky owner of the circus that employs young Edward. Happens to be a werewolf (in Edward’s tales). Has a strong, outgoing personality and humor. Doesn’t need to move, but has good stage presence.

Don Price: Age: 20’s-40’s. Baritone C3 - F#4. Possible movement, but not crucial. Snarky bully antagonistic contemporary of Edward’s. Sandra’s first fiancé́. Able to eventually transform and be empathic and likable.

Jenny Hill: Age: 30-40’s. Mix/Belt to E5. Alluring and determined as Young Jenny, then solitary and disillusioned as the older Jenny, though still big hearted. She has dignity and honesty, crucial in helping Will understand his father’s motivations. Will sing/dance in the ensemble.

Witch: Age: 20’s-40’s. Adult female. High Belt. Vocal range: F3 - F5. Good dance/movement ability. Commanding character with great physical presence and storytelling ability. Able to exude a sense of magic and wonder. Will also be in the ensemble as cast of characters.
