NOTE: We are seeking edgy and quirky non-“traditional” musical theater actor-musicians who will bring a bit of themselves to the band. All ethnicities, body types and genders are not just welcomed, but encouraged to audition.
Please prepare a 32 bar vocal cut of a pop/blues/soul song. Guitarists and Pianists should accompany themselves on their instrument. In addition, please prepare a short (<30s) instrumental solo that showcases your groove and proficiency. Please bring your book. Also bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

SYNOPSIS: Musician Ace Baker nervously takes the concert stage in his hometown of Nashville as memories of his youth begin to flood back. Spending the first decade of his life fatherless, queer and bullied, Ace's life is changed forever when a phone call reveals that his “deceased” Grandpa Beau has been alive all along and his mother knew. The bond between the men grows and family secrets unravel as Beau puts a guitar in Ace’s hands.
[ACE BAKER] CAST Male, mid 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. Our charismatic narrator and band leader. Ace is bruised, bright, and eventually brave - once he comes into his queerness. Ace is a proficient guitarist and tenor, with Jason Mraz meets Jelly Roll vibes.
[DAPHNEY] CAST Female, mid-late 20-30s. Any ethnicity. Ace’s eccentrically sassy and quick-witted best friend of 15 years. She’ll protect him at all costs. A proficient violinist with great pop-soul vocals.
[POP POP BEAU] Male, 50s-60s. Any ethnicity. Ace’s grandfather and Raven’s father. He’s a gruff wise ass, full of intrusive questions and inappropriate jokes. Beau is very good at carrying secrets. He loves, but only on his terms. A proficient guitarist, who can play both acoustic and electric, with blues-country vocals.
[FERRIS] CAST Male, Mid 20s-30s. Any ethnicity. Ace’s bully and first kiss. He’s a manipulative mofo. Ferris is callous on the outside but conflicted within. He softens with Ace, but only in private. A proficient guitarist with pop-soul vocals.
[RAVEN] CAST Female, mid-late 40s. Any ethnicity. Ace’s single mother. She’s a force of a woman and doesn’t take sh*t from anyone. She doesn’t need a man, but wants one. She has blacklisted her father Beau from her life, for reasons she won’t share. A proficient mandolin player with great pop-soul vocals.
[LARRY] Male, 30s-40s. Any ethnicity. Larry is Raven’s boyfriend and eventually Ace’s step-father. He's a cornball of human, full of Dad jokes and thumbs up. Larry tries way too hard to get on Ace’s good side, and never gives up. A proficient bass guitarist with pop-soul vocals.
[NURSE/KARINA/LE-ANN] CAST Female, Mid-late 20-30s. Any ethnicity. Nurse is Beau’s nurse throughout the play. Karina is Ferris’s high-school girlfriend. She’s a bigoted mean-girl and Ace’s worst nightmare. Le-Ann is Beau’s wife. She’s scorned by his circumstances, but desperate to make their marriage work. A proficient piano player with great pop-soul vocals.
[DENNIS] CAST Male, late 20-30s. Any ethnicity. Dennis is one of Beau’s lovers. He’s upfront and cut-throat with no strings attached. A remarkable drummer with solid pop-soul vocals.
[STANDBY 1/ACE ALTERNATE] Male, mid 20-30s. Any ethnicity. Covers the roles of ACE and FERRIS, plus all their instrumental and vocal needs. A proficient guitar player. NOTE: This track will have guaranteed performances as ACE.
