MARTEN ROOT: Engineer in Charge. A stubborn realist.
FRANCES RAND: A medical technician, quick to point out that there ought to be an actual MD at a facility of this importance. (There isn’t.)
MARIA STASLAW: She is the Facility Political Officer. She has no actual involvement in operations, nor any direct authority.... but Staslaw is the eyes and ears of the government, and is therefore dangerous to careers and even lives.
EVAN GARTH: Supervisor of the entire facility. Has a background in particle physics, but he once made the mistake of revealing a flair for management.
DECEMBER: A poet. A woman older than thirty, younger than seventy. She is from very, very far away.
