Breakdown

DEEPA - Female, South Asian, 40-50s, reclusive, melodramatic widow in white homebody clothes. When not praying for liberation from the cycle of birth and death or her daughter to get married she secretly reads Mills and Boon romance novels and yearns for a more exciting life as a writer. Must be able to handle high comedy and real emotion.

VINOD – Male, South Asian, early 30s, accountant, high-strung and socially awkward. He has the potential to be a ladies man if only he could see himself that way. His confidence has plummeted since his recent divorce, but he has not forgotten that Deepa was his first childhood crush. Must have great comic timing.

TARA – Female, South Asian, late 20s, Deepa’s rebellious daughter. She is modern, free-spirited and romantic. She has a fascination for Western fashion and ideas most of which come from watching American television shows. She works in a bookstore and dreams of leaving Mumbai to study creative writing in America. A fiery temper, but also capable of great tenderness.

LALITHA – Female, South Asian 50s, Deepa’s best friend. Socialite matchmaker. Always impeccably dressed. She tempts and cajoles Deepa to emerge from her shell and rejoin her old social life of cards, shopping and luncheons.

*MANOJ – Male, South Asian, early 30s, Deepa’s son. Arrogant and opinionated. A banker who works in Singapore and wants to take care of his newly widowed mother.
*CHIRAG – Male, South Asian, mid 30s, douchebag showoff investment banker from Hong Kong that Lalitha brings to the house for Tara to meet as a marriage prospect.
*SANDEEP – late 50s, a kind, but pushy widower Lalitha introduces to Deepa as a marriage prospect.
*Please note that the roles of “Chirag”, “Sandeep” and “Manoj” will all be played by the same actor.
