Breakdown
A Man’s World, written by Rachel Crothers in 1910 tells the story of Frank, a female novelist devoted to the plight of underprivileged women, raising her adopted son Kiddie amidst her circle of Bohemian friends in New York. When Kiddie’s parentage is questioned and ultimately revealed, Frank must confront the double standard for women and men, and choose between love and her ideals.
Character Breakdown:
WOMEN
Frank Ware, 28-38, A female novelist with a keen concern for the plight of wayward women. Adores Kiddie, her adopted son. Strong, free, unafraid, with the glowing charm of a woman at the height of her development.
Lione Brune, 22-32, Tempestuous and judgmental singer. Must sing.
Clara Oakes 30-45; A nervous, timid painter of portraits, a little out of place with these open-minded bohemians.
MEN
Kiddie 7-10; A sturdy, precocious, bright boy raised among artists. Loves his adopted mother dearly.
Fritz Bahn, 25-35, Sensitive artist and stalwart friend. German accent. Plays simple piano piece on stage.
Emile Grimbaux, 25-35, Opinionated painter. French accent.
Wells Trevor, 25-35, Affable, American Playwright.
Malcolm Gaskell, 35-45, Strong willed, charming, successful American newspaper editor.
