Citadel Theatre Celebrates World Theatre Day

Citadel Theatre is proud to recognize Wednesday, March 27, as World Theatre Day. Created in 1961 by UNESCO, World Theatre Day is celebrated annually on March 27 by theatre communities around the globe.

For the Citadel Theatre, World Theatre Day is a chance to recognize the theatre's strong commitment to being inclusive, innovative, and international in our productions and our practices. Currently, there are four shows in rehearsal in the Citadel Theatre: The interconnected political satires The Candidate and The Party, a Deaf/hearing production of The Tempest, and Theatre Yes' roving production Slight of Mind. "I can't walk anywhere in this building right now without bumping into an artist rehearsing. We're working everywhere - in the theatres, the rehearsal halls, and even the hallways," says Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director of the Citadel Theatre. "There are artists here from all over Canada and as far away as Sweden, speaking different languages, and investigating different approaches to theatre."

Cloran, who is currently directing the World Premieres of The Candidate and The Party with playwright Kat Sandler, has included several firsts for the Citadel in his second season of programming: two interconnected plays with the same cast, taking place at the exact same time, in two different theatres; and a production of The Tempest with both Deaf and hearing actors in the cast, performed in both ASL and English, directed by international director Josette Bushell-Mingo.
