By: A.A. Cristi
The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents "Steel Magnolias," June 2-18, 2017. Tickets may be purchased online at dmplayhouse.com, by phone at 515-277-6261, or at the Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St. "Steel Magnolias" is sponsored by EMC Insurance Companies. "Steel Magnolias" is the story of six unlikely friends: the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy (Sherryl Viars) who dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (Gina Gedler); Truvy's eager new assistant, Annelle (Jessica Elwell), who is not sure whether or not she is still married; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee (Debra Garner), who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn (Karen Schaeffer), whose daughter, Shelby (Kim Haymes) is about to marry a "good ole boy." Their conversations in Truvy's beauty salon bring hilarity, until tragedy strikes and brings them face-to-face with their mortality. "Steel Magnolias" is directed by John Viars. The Playhouse is one of the oldest and largest community theatres in the US. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
