The Des Moines Community Playhouse presents "James and the Giant Peach," Jan. 28- Feb. 13. Tickets may be purchased at The Playhouse ticket office, 831 42nd St.; by phone at 515-277-6261; and online at dmplayhouse.com. From Roald Dahl, the author of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," comes a story full of imagination. James Trotter, an orphan, is sent to live with his horrible relations, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. One dark night, a mysterious man gives James an unexpected gift: a bag of glowing, wriggling lights and a promise of magic. When the lights break free, something amazing happens. On the long-dead tree, a single peach begins to grow and grow and grow. Little does James realize that the giant peach will become a magical escape from his ghastly aunts.

James and his newfound insect friends embark on an extraordinary journey that takes them halfway around the world. Along the way there are dangers and excitement, friends and enemies, music and laughter. Will James survive the journey and find the new life he longs for?

The Playhouse cast, under the direction of Kathy Pingel, features Jack Ray as James, Sue Tell and Karen Schaeffer as aunts Sponge and Spiker, Eric Bench as the Old Man, Joe Gentzler as Old-Green-Grasshopper, Sean Bates as Centipede, Carrie Hardisty as Ladybird, Kelsey Therkildsen as Miss Spider, and Sam Bates-Norum as Earthworm. The children's chorus includes Chance Bender, Kyra Berg, Riley Dean, Julie Dunlap, Miller McCoy, and Tate Nelson.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
