A SMALL FIRE Set for DM Playhouse's Play Reading Series, 12/2

By:

The Des Moines Community Playhouse play reading series continues on Monday, Dec. 2, at 7:00 PM with Adam Bock's "A Small Fire." The evening is free; beverages will be available for purchase.

"A Small Fire" highlights the lives of happily married couple John and Emily as their world is quickly flipped upside down when Emily falls victim to a mysterious disease. Soon, the disease takes her senses of sight, smell, taste, and hearing, leaving her with only touch to communicate. Emily must now depend on her husband, who she has always taken for granted, to experience their daughter's wedding and run her company. Bock's funny, touching work leads to an unexpected love story after all seems to be lost.

The Playhouse cast, under the direction of Katie Coon, features Katie Dorrell, Rusk Dorsett, Karen Schaeffer, Becky Scholtec, and Kevin Shelby.

The play reading series is held one night each month on the stage in the theatre's upper lobby. Actors read from scripts; there are no costumes or scenery pieces. The goal of the play reading series is to offer audiences and volunteers an opportunity to familiarize themselves with upcoming productions, as well as offer insight into new scripts and possible titles to be mounted in the future.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
