"The Well of Happiness" by Stuart Ostfeld made its debut in Seattle, Washington. The original director, Madge Montgomery, has revived this psychological thriller for Front Range audiences. Produced by the Theater Company of Lafayette, the play opens at The Mary Miller Theater in Lafayette June 6 - 28. Tickets at: www.tclstage.org or call 1-800-838-3006.
The year is 1996. Advertising exec and single mom, Melanie, spearheads a campaign to market a lightweight handgun for women, but fails to recognize her own teenage son's dangerous obsession.
"The play doesn't deliver a message or have a particular agenda, but it does grapple with the question of gun ownership," says Montgomery. "When this play first premiered audiences were eager to talk about how to balance the need for self-protection with the inherent dangers of firearms. We live in a more polarized time now, and TCL hopes the play will provide a way for today's audiences to consider this complex issue in a fresh way."
At its heart, "The Well of Happiness" is a dynamic mystery, beginning with the chilling end point, and then you see how the story unfolds. It keeps the audience guessing up until the end.
