Denver Center Theatre Company’s TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Runs 9/30-10/30

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, an adaptation of Harper Lee's American classic, will play the Denver Center Theatre Company's Stage Theatre September 30-October 30 (opening night Thursday, October 6.) Tickets are on sale now, by calling 303.893.4100 or www.denvercenter.org.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is the story of Atticus Finch, an attorney in the segregated South of the 1930s, who courageously defends a black man accused of rape. Directed by Sabin Epstein with indelible characters and gripping suspense, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD examines the loss of innocence and acts of extraordinary personal courage in a time of fear.

The cast of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD includes DCTC veteran actors John Hutton (A Midsummer Night's Dream, The House of the Spirits) as Atticus Finch, Philip Pleasants (A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Christmas Carol) as Walter Cunningham/Judge Taylor, Kathleen M. Brady (Superior Donuts, Dracula) as Mrs. Dubose and Mike Hartman (Superior Donuts, The Catch) as Mr. Radley/Bob Ewell. Playing Jean Louise is Kathleen McCall (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello), Calpurnia is Kim Staunton (Ruined, A Raisin in the Sun), Reverend Sykes is Charles Weldon (Mama Hated Diesels, Radio Golf) and Heck Tate is Jeffrey Roark (Mama Hated Diesels, A Christmas Carol). William Hahn (King Lear) plays Boo Radley, Lawrence Hecht (A Midsummer's Night Dream, The House of the Spirits) is Mr. Gilmer and Thomas Russo is Dill (A Christmas Carol, Eventide). Debuting at the DCTC are Tyrien Obahnjoko as Tom Robinson, Kimberly McWilliams as Mrs. Robinson/Townsperson, Caroline Rosenblum as Scout and Matthew Gary as Jem.

The stage version of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is by Christopher Sergel adapted from Harper Lee's novel and directed by Sabin Epstein who previously directed Absurd Person Singular at the DCTC. Set design is by James Kronzer (When Tang Met Laika, The Catch) while costume design is by Angela Calin (Absurd Person Singular, The Miracle Worker). Lighting design is by Don Darnutzer (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Dracula), sound design is by Craig Breitenbach (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Dracula) and Gregg Coffin is composer. Fight director is Geoffrey Kent (Ruined, Superior Donuts, Dracula).

About the playwright: Christopher Sergel's interests and talents led him on many adventures throughout the world. As captain of the schooner Chance, he spent two years in the South Pacific; as a writer for Sports Afield magazine, he lived in the African bush for a year; as a lieutenant commander during WWII, he taught celestial navigation; as a playwright, his adaptation of Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio was seen on Broadway. But throughout his life, his greatest adventure and deepest love was his work with Dramatic Publishing. During this time, he wrote adaptations of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, Cheaper By the Dozen, The Mouse That Roared, Up the Down Staircase, Fame, Black Elk Speaks and many more. His love of theatre and his caring for writers made him a generous and spirited mentor to many playwrights here and around the world. His inspiration and integrity attracted to the company fine writers including C.P. Taylor, Timberlake Wertenbaker, Arthur Miller, Roald Dahl and E.B. White - to name just a few. He once said he hoped to be remembered as E.B. White described Charlotte... "...a true friend and a good writer."
