BWW Previews: PREVIEW 2018 at CANDLELIGHT AND DTC

Delaware's 2018 theatrical season begins on January 20 with openings at Candlelight Theatre, Delaware Theatre Co and UD REP Ensemble. An exultant time for Aisle Say. I will be reviewing REP on Friday 19 Jan, DTC on Jan 20 and Candlelight on 21 Jan.

I had previously written a season promo for UD REP so I will not include them with this missive.

CANDLELIGHT THEATRE

DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS Jan 20 - Feb 25

An uproarious farce about 2 con men who discover the meaning of the phrase "what goes around comes around" while plying their trade. (Think THE PRODUCERS on the French Riviera). Based on the 1988 film starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels premiered on Broadway in 2005 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and 10 Drama Desk Awards. A perfect way to shed the winter blues, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will leave a smile on your face and, perhaps, a bit of larceny in your heart. Caution: You may wish to check your wallet and purse before leaving the theatre. Candlelight servers are accomplished pick pockets. (Just kidding! Just kidding! They are wonderful).

I have encountered a few dirty rotten scoundrels in my life that I would nominate for leading roles, but none neither sing nor dance! Drat!

THE DROWSY CHAPERONE - Mar 17 - Apr 22

A loving parody of the musicals of the '20's, a musical within a comedy, featuring one show-stopping number after another. The musical range is from the '20's to the '40's. A man in a chair puts on his favorite record which comes to life and an evening of madcap delight begins featuring two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone. Drowsy = drunk. Drowsy took Broadway by storm in 2006 winning 5 Tony Awards and 7 Drama Desk Awards including Best Show. Hailed by New York Magazine as "The Perfect Broadway Musical."

DELAWARE THEATRE COMPANY

GO FIGURE - THE Randy Gardner STORY - Jan 17 - 28

What might be termed a "live autobiography", the life of Gardner, a World Champion figure skater. Joining him to tell his story is skating partner of 45 years, Tai Babilonia and Olympian Dorothy Hamill. Says Gardner, "people thought Tai and I were a couple. We weren't. I'm gay." Add Olympic Gold Medalist Dorothy Hamill to this balletic triumvirate; the woman who mesmerized the world not only with her grace and talent but also with "The Hamill Wedge", the '70's pop cultural rejoinder to Farrah Fawcett's flowing leonine hair.

This is a limited run show and not produced by DTC. In fact, when the show played in LA, Olympic Champion diver Greg Louganis was a special guest.

Aisle Say will be interviewing Gardner later this week.

DTC offers an exciting photo op event for Wilmingtonians. "Family Skate Night with the stars" on January 15 at Horizon Services Riverfront Rink from 6pm -8pm.

HEISENBERG - Feb 7 - 25

Amidst the bustle of a crowded London train station, Georgie spots Alex, a much older man, and plants a kiss on his neck. This electric encounter thrusts these two strangers into a fascinating and life-changing game. Heisenberg brings to blazing, theatrical life the uncertain and often comical sparring match that is human connection. It is a May - September love story starring - for the first time - DTC's Producing Artistic Director Bud Martin and veteran actor Karen Peake.
