Texas Performing Arts presents the Austin debut of the critically acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma, Monday, March 28 in Bass Concert Hall. Recently nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album for its CD Off The Map, the Silk Road Ensemble presents a wide range of music, new and traditional, hailing from Asia to Europe to the Americas.

"Wonderful new pieces have emerged from the commissioning workshops we've held in the past few years, and the Silk Road Ensemble and I are delighted to be able to perform several of them in Texas and along the West Coast this spring," said Yo-Yo Ma, Silk Road Project founder and artistic director. "Some of this music-such as Osvaldo Golijiov's Air to Air, and a brand-new piece by Gabriela Lena Frank-comes from composers we've developed deep relationships with. Other pieces on this tour my fellow Ensemble members have brought to the group or created for us as a way to share their own traditions. We can't wait to engage our audiences in this musical dialogue."

Recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Silk Road Project fosters cultural exchange by uniting artists from Asia, the Middle East, and the West in creative collaborations. The ensemble functions not as a fixed collective but rather as a collection of like-minded musicians dedicated to exploring the relationship between tradition and innovation in music from the East and West. As displayed on PBS's Live From Lincoln Center, the group's remarkable concerts are renowned for their ambition and range as they perform new commissions as well as traditional music.
