Rover Dramawerks announces auditions for THE GIRLS IN 509 by Howard Teichmann, directed by Mark-Brian Sonna. Auditions will be held Sunday, June 17 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and Monday, June 18 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Callbacks, if needed, will be announced.

Auditions will be at Rover Dramawerks’ office space, 521 J Place, Suite 629, between Plano Parkway and the Bush Turnpike, a half block west of Avenue K.

Synopsis: Do today’s politicians make you want to bury your head in the sand? Two wealthy ladies cut themselves off from the outside world in 1932 when “that man” Roosevelt succeeded Hoover. Twenty-five years later their hotel has been condemned and a swarm of reporters has discovered their hideaway, followed close behind by the leaders of both the Republican and Democratic parties, greedily drawn to their supposed wealth. What changed during the girls’ seclusion, along with all that has ridiculously stayed the same, makes this a comic delight no matter who you vote for!

Roles – 3-6 women and 5-8 men (11 total):

Mimsy: A plain but exceedingly charming young woman with a childlike quality. Though she’s willing to accept the status quo, she yearns for a better and more fulfilling life. She charms everyone she meets with her sweet and good nature. She’s also very crafty, the type who could weave a full rug out of pieces of yarn. Late 30s to 40s.

Aunt Hattie: An aristocratic middle aged lady. She is very set in her ways, especially when it comes to politics for she is a diehard Republican. She manages to get things done and have people do things for her with her sometimes questionable logic. Though she knows she’s nearly penniless, she chooses to still live life as if she was still wealthy. She acts as a mother to Mimsy. 50s to 70s

Ryan: A reporter from the Daily News who knows it all. Slightly obnoxious, but nonetheless likeable, in his own way.

Old Jim: An elevator operator who is in between acting gigs. Keep in mind his last acting gig was 19 years before, but he longs to free himself of his day job. His job is to care and protect Mimsy and Aunt Hattie from the outside world so they can remain living in their own particular time warp, though he is tired of his job. 40s +

Professor Pusey: An ex professor who was fired from the university who now is trying to be a reporter. He has an extensive track record of not getting news stories, or keeping jobs. This time around he will do anything to get his story so he can keep his job. His bumbling charm is what makes him eventually succeed. Late 30s to 50s.

Miss Freud: An efficient, masculine, attractive woman. She works for the welfare department and is a firm belief in government and that red tape is a good thing. Any age.

Winthrop Allen: An elegant, well-dressed man who is a Republican Party operative. Very slick. He is to be played by the same actor who plays Francis X. Nella who is a Democrat Party operative. Any age.

Francis X. Nella: see Winthrop Allen, above.

Summers: A reporter of the Herald Tribune. Pushy. Any age. Male or female.

Johnson: A reporter of the Daily Mirror. Pushy. Any age. Male or Female.

Rosenthal: A reporter of the Post. Pushy. Any age. Male or Female.

Aubrey McKittridge: A young attorney that embodies the stereotype. He is a Harvard graduate that probably only made it through school because of the family name and money. 20s to early 30s.

Stylistically all actors must be able to perform in the style of the 1930s and 1940s screwball comedy style. Mid-Atlantic accents are preferable for most of the characters, though not required.

All roles are available. It is highly recommended that you be familiar with the script before auditioning. Email audition09@roverdramawerks.com for an appointment, and you will be given access to a script.

Prepare a one-minute memorized comedic monologue. Be prepared for cold readings from the script. A resume and head shot is requested.

Actors and technicians will receive stipends. Rehearsals will begin the week of July 16 in Plano. The Girls in 509 will run August 23 – September 15, 2012 at the Cox Building Playhouse in Plano.
