Photo Flash: Meet the Cast of Theatre Three's THE SUM OF US

By:

In conjunction with Dallas Pride, Theatre Three will present The Sum of Us by David Stevens as the opening of its 2016-2017 Theatre Too season. The playexplores the volatile relationship between an aging widower and his gay son. After meeting in a local pub, Jeff and a young gardener, Greg, hit it off and begin to date. When he meets Jeff's stubborn, opinionated Dad, however, Greg begins to back off. Meanwhile, Dad also has a new flame: a woman he met through a dating service. Scroll down for a sneak peek at the cast in character!

"I found this script 8 years ago, right around when my father moved in with me," says director Mark C. Guerra. "Being a gay man myself, the story really resonated with me in a personal way. Their relationship and mine with my father are not exactly the same, but the general concept of a very supportive father and a gay son looking for love is pretty close to home. I'm excited to delve into the psyche of these men and go deep into the relationship between father and son."

The play is scheduled to run concurrently with Dallas Pride events. In September, members of the Dallas LGBT community come together to celebrate their history and spirit, culminating in a day of festivities in uptown Dallas, mere blocks away from the Quadrangle.

"What I love about The Sum of Us," Guerra explains, "Is that using only four characters, we get to see the different ways that each person views being open about homosexuality. The Sum of Us is unique in that it shows us a family dynamic that is probably more common that we are aware of."

Many audience members may be familiar with the Australian film adaptation of this David Stevens play, which starred a young and then-unknown Russell Crowe. The director of the original off-Broadway production helmed the film, which won awards from the Australian Film Institute and the Montreal World Film Festival. That production enjoyed a healthy run at New York's Cherry Lane Theatre and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play 1990-1991.

The Sum of Us stars Randy Pearlman as Harry, Blake Lee as Jeff, Michael Brannian as Greg and Lindsay Hayward as Joyce.

Performances run September 1 - 25, 2016, playing Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays - Saturdays at 8:00 p.m.; Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Press Opening: Saturday, September 3 at 8:00 p.m. at Theatre Too at Theatre Three Dallas, 2800 Routh Street, Ste #168, Dallas, TX.
