Andrew Palermo's World Premiere of NICKEL MINES to Play Claire Trevor School of the Arts, 5/31-6/7

The Claire Trevor School of the Arts Department of Drama presents Nickel Mines, an original work by Creator/Director/Choreographer and faculty member Andrew Palermo, as its final offering in a season which has focused on the theme of Justice/Exploration of Citizenship. A non-traditional musical combining spoken dialogue with interpretive movement and a powerful original score by composer Dan Dyer, Nickel Mines tells the story of a school shooting in the show's namesake Amish town, and investigates the ramifications of that event and the various responses it evoked.

South Coast Repertory turns classic fairy tales inside out for the season's final Theatre for Young Audiences production: The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. John Glore adapted the play from the book by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. The show, with a host of wacky characters and silly songs, is directed by Jessica Kubzansky and runs today, May 23-June 8 on the Julianne Argyros Stage.

South Coast Repertory's 2014-15 season moves from the Mediterranean island in Shakespeare's The Tempest to Cornwall in a new take on the classic Tristan & Yseult, from Mecca in Zealot by Theresa Rebeck to an updated look at the Land of Oz in OZ 2.5 by Catherine Trieschmann. SCR will present classic, contemporary and new works, including Mr. Wolf by Rajiv Joseph, Of Good Stock by Melissa Ross and Peter and the Starcatcher by Rick Elice. Season subscriptions are available now; single tickets will go on sale on Aug. 1.

Summer at the Center (SATC) returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts for its 23rd consecutive year and will be held July 21 - August 2. This award-winning program provides high-risk and underserved youths facing personal challenges a safe environment in which to grow, trust and develop self-esteem and positive goals. Using a musical theater format, SATC professional teaching artists create daily lessons and exercises that engage participants in fun, creative and productive ways. Following their hard work during the two-week program, the students will perform a Broadway revue-style show in Samueli Theater on Saturday, August 2 at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The performances are free and open to the public; no reservations are required. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The performances are part of Segerstrom Center's Free for All Series, which allows guests to experience different aspects of Center's artistic and education programs at no cost. Fifty years ago, a band of young actors-led by a duo fresh out of San Francisco State-came together through a love of theatre. When they officially formed as a company, South Coast Repertory, the group's first production was Moliere's classic, Tartuffe. As SCR concludes its 50th Season this year, it comes full circle with a new production of Tartuffe, directed by Dominique Serrand, today, May 9-June 8, on the Segerstrom Stage.
Segerstrom Center Receives $100,000 Grant for DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOL Program

Segerstrom Center for the Arts has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Disney to help bring the Disney Musicals in Schools program to Orange County. The Center was one of only two arts organizations in the nation and the only one in California selected this year to collaborate with Disney Musicals in Schools. The program is an outreach initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Group to create ongoing theater programs in local elementary schools. The Center will select four Orange County public elementary schools to participate in 2014. The grant funds two years of programming ? four schools will be selected this year, and another four next year. The after-school programs are completely free to participating schools. Disney Musicals in Schools helps to keep the arts in schools and utilizes the unique world of musical theater to build positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents and the community. Students work in teams to develop or restore self-confidence, strengthen communication and collaboration skills all while learning and enjoying the process of creating a Disney musical theater production.

Orange County movie fans can look forward to another great summer of free and fun film screenings at Segerstrom Center for the Arts as Movie Mondays returns for its eighth season on the Arts Plaza. Movie Mondays 2014 kicks off with the heartwarming 1935 classic The Little Colonel, starring Shirley Temple. From post Civil War America we head to 1990s London with the sparkling Spice Girls starring in the jet set musical, Spice World. Then it is off to turn-of-the-20th century Paris with the Academy Award®-winning musical Gigi, directed by Vincente Minnelli and featuring some of the most memorable Lerner & Loewe tunes. Continuing with the winner of this year's Audience Favorite Fan Poll, Cabaret, starring Oscar winners Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey. Shirley MacLaine as the eternal optimist in Sweet Charity wraps up the summer film series. Center audiences will have a chance to see MacLaine live when she makes her Center debut on September 20 in her one-woman show.
