South Coast Rep Presents Three Days of Rain May 13-June 12

By: Apr. 21, 2011

Three Days of Rain, Richard Greenberg's Pulitzer Prize-nominated play about two generations of intertwined families, returns to its birthplace with a new production at South Coast Repertory May 13-June 12.

SCR gave the play its very first production in 1997 before it went on to successful Broadway and West End runs. The new production will appear on the Segerstrom Stage, with SCR Founding Artistic Director David Emmes at the helm.

"SCR and Richard Greenberg have a long history, and this is one of my favorite Greenberg plays," Emmes said. "It's a marvelous work about how easily the past can be misinterpreted and how skewed our perceptions of our parents can sometimes be."

The story begins in the mid-90s, as Walker and Nan Janeway gather with their childhood friend, Pip, for the reading of their father's will, which contains a surprise. The second act takes us back to the 1960s-and reveals the story behind that surprise.

The actors playing the adult children in the first act play their parents in the second. Kevin Rahm, best known as Lee McDermott in ABC's "Desperate Housewives," portrays Walker and his father, Ned. Susannah Schulman (SCR's A Midsummer Night's Dream) is his sister, Nan, and mother, Lina. Brendan Hines (TV's "Lie to Me") portrays Pip and his father, Theo.

The artistic team is comprised of Thomas Buderwitz (set design), Holly Poe Durbin (costume design), Lonnie Rafael Alcaraz (lighting design), Cricket S. Myers (sound design) and Jamie A. Tucker (stage manager).

S.L. and Betty Huang/Huang Family Foundation are the Honorary Producers. The Segerstrom Stage season media partner is PBS SoCal; the media partner for Three Days of Rain is Orange Coast Magazine.

From New York to theatres across America, from London's West End to a star-studded Broadway revival, audiences knew they were seeing something special. A newly discovered journal, filled with enigmatic entries, recalls Greenwich Village in the early 1960s when two young architects, unaware they're on the brink of fame, struggle with plans for an important commission.
