The Hartt School Presents Sonagi Project

The Hartt School presents the Sonagi Project on Tuesday, April 3, at 12:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium.  “Sonagi Project” is a Korean percussion group consisting of five musicians, led by Chang Jar Hyo, which creates modern, original music based on traditional Korean rhythms and chants. The Hartt School presents The Hartt Composers Ensemble on Wednesday, April 11, at 8:00 PM, in Berkman Recital Hall, University ofHartford200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford.  The Hartt Composers Ensemble and special guests in the Hartford area’s largest celebration of American composer John Cage’s centennial, which is being celebrated internationally this year. Arguably one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, John Cage redefined what music can be. The Hartt Chamber Choir performs selections from its recent concert at the Eastern Regional ACDA Conference, as well as music by Bach, Corgliano, Rogier, and Whitacre. The Hartt School Presents the Hartt Symphony Orchestra & The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz in a Collaborative Concert of American Music 

The Hartt School Presents the Hartt Symphony Orchestra & The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz in a Collaborative Concert of American Music on Friday, April 20, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. The program features Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein; An American in Paris by George Gershwin; and six pieces commissioned by the Foundation for New American Music. The Foundation was founded in 1978 by Hartt alumnus andWest Hartford native Jack Elliott.  He was a prominent television and film composer, conductor, music arranger, and television producer, who served as music director for the Grammy Awards for 30 years. The Hartt School recently received the large collection of music associated with Mr. Elliott's Foundation for New American Music thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Bobbi Elliott.  The Jack Elliott Collection is a unique and invaluable trove of more than 350 commissioned works, largely symphonic works with jazz influences, by nearly 100 composers, including Erich Korngold, Henry Mancini, John Williams, Ray Brown, and Mr. Elliott himself.  Mr. Elliott also created two professional orchestras to perform the work in the collection.  This concert is Hartt's debut performance of music from the Collection.  Hartt alumna and friend of Mr. Elliott, Ms. Dionne Warwick, will speak as part of this first concert featuring the Jack Elliott Collection. The competition is intense.  The words are hilarious.  Let the spelling begin! The show centers around a fictional spelling bee inPutnam CountyNew YorkThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a Tony Award winning musical, with William Finn’s score and Rachel Sheinkin’s book, centers around the experiences, joys, sorrows, and personal discoveries centered around the county spelling bee.  Directed by Hartt faculty member Annmarie Davis, choreographed by Denise Moore-Leetch, and Music Direction by Paul Feyer, the show runs Monday, April 23, Wednesday, April 25, at 7:30; and Saturday, April 28, at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. 

 

With book by Arthur Kopit, music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, Nine is based on Ferderico Fellini’s semi auto-biographical film 81/2. The musical focuses on Guido Contini, a film producer who is dreading his upcoming his 40th birthday and facing a midlife crisis and the romantic difficulties he faces.  Directed by Hartt faculty member Ralph Perkins, the show runs Tuesday, April 24, Thursday, April 26, and Friday, April 27 at 7:30 PM; and Sunday, April 29, at 3:00 PM.
