Public Library of New London has announced their summer reading list. Summer reading lists aren't just for students anymore. It seems everyone has a list to recommend these days - Oprah, National Public Radio, even J.P. Morgan Private Bank, which for more than a decade has been recommending its gold-standard favorites for wealthy clients.

In celebration of summer, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm on Thursdays evenings the Public Library of New London is encouraging people to read books selected from a list of ten titles suggested this summer by Nicholas Kristof, columnist for The New York Times.

Selections to be discussed are:

Aug. 4, Scoop by Evelyn Waugh

Aug.11, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque;

Aug.18, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

Aug. 25, Germinal by Emile Zola.

According to Kristof's column of July 10, "These are ten triumphs of fiction, but fun to read and significant for literary or historical reasons. I guarantee pleasure and also bragging rights at your next cocktail party. And if your kids read these, I bet they'll ace the SAT."

Books are available to borrow at the Circulation Desk at the library and everyone attending is requested to bring one or more questions about the book to discuss with the group.

The program will run from 5:30 to 7:00 PM and will begin with a light supper. A menu from a local restaurant is at the Circulation Desk. Please pre-pay for your selection and leave your money by 1:00 PM, the afternoon of the program. The food will be delivered to the library at 5:30.

Participants can bring their own meal, if preferred. Beverages will be provided by the library.
