Square Foot Theatre Stages RENT, Beginning Tonight
Mike Backes will be making his Connecticut directing debut with Rent. Some of his directing highlights include East in Red which was part of The Frigid Festival in NYC and Little Shop of Horrors. He has toured the country preforming in such musicals as Grease, Footloose and as a proud member of The Broadway Boys. Among his many acting credits he was Roger in the Long Island Regional premier of Rent. The cast is over joyed to have him not only as their director but also as a member of their SFT family.
A beautiful musical loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's RENT follows a group young artists and musicians during a struggling to survive, in New York Cities lower East Side. Each character must battle through their own emotional and physical battles, in the search purpose, understanding, and love. The audience will be captivated as they watch each member of the cast persevere through their daily struggles with addiction, poverty and HIV/AIDS. Jonathan Larson sadly passed away before he was able to watch his amazing musical premiere on stage but his legacy lives on each time a production takes to the stage. VIVA LA VIE BOHEME!
