NewArts: Newtown Musicals opens its 3rd season tonight with the Connecticut premiere of Liberty Smith, a hysterical and historical new musical written by Michael Weiner, Eric Cohen, Marc Madnick and Adam Abraham.

Featuring a talented cast of 54 Newtown, Connecticut-area youth, the production is directed by Michael Unger (associate artistic director at The York Theatre Company), music direction by Jeffrey Saver (18 Broadway shows) with choreography by JoAnn Hunter (Broadway - as a performer 12 shows including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Thou Shalt Not, Kiss Me Kate, Chicago and Jerome Robbins' Broadway. Hunter returns to Broadway as the choreographer for Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock - The Musical).

Performances run tonight, July 31, through August 2, 2015.

Next week...Disney's The Lion King Jr., featuring a cast of 120 Newtown kids ages 5 to 13, under the direction of Unger with choreography by Shannon Lewis (Broadway: Fosse, Sweet Charity) with music direction by Brett Boles. NewArts: Newtown Musicals, is a division of the 12.14 Foundation, a non-for-profit organization formed following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School to encourage personal development through high-level performing arts and leadership training programs. The Foundation provides experiences that produce a long-lasting, positive affect on the way children see themselves and the world around them.
