Mikata! Salsa & Latin Jazz Orchestra Celebrates Diversity & Community Through Music

By:

Mikata! Salsa & Latin Jazz Orchestra Celebrates Diversity & Community Through Music ImageMikata!, a Salsa and Latin Jazz Orchestra, will perform a full repertoire of hard-hitting Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Bolero, Cha-cha and Latin Jazz on Friday, May 18th @8pm at Milford Center for the Arts at 40 Railroad Avenue South. The group guarantees to lift up all audiences and create a sense of community by getting people to dance and have a joyous time.

Mikata has been delighting audiences around the USA, in Canada and abroad for over 30 years, celebrating diversity and community through music and dance. As a recipient of the New Haven Arts Council Award for "outstanding contribution to the cultural life of the community" and the HPN Latin Music Achievement Award, Mikata has performed at clubs in New York City and at colleges & universities around the country, and at concerts and festivals in the US, Canada and Japan.

The band is renowned for their contemporary arrangements of the great classics of Mambo and Salsa from the 1950's, 60's and 70's. This was the era when the dynamic, percussive quality of Latin music reigned supreme and Mikata brilliantly brings this element to the fore in its virtuoso performances.

Mikata's repertoire includes new arrangements of Jazz classics, original songs and gripping folkloric-Salsa hybrids that foster a direct experience of the African-Caribbean roots of the music. In addition to great Jazz soloing from the horn and rhythm sections, Mikata provides a short Salsa dance lesson during performances for those who need to brush up on their steps.

To make more room for dancing, this performance will be general admission and seats will be available for those who want to rest their weary feet. Still a BYOEEE* vibe: Bring Your Own Everything Except the Entertainment. Wine, beer and soft drinks, as well as snacks, are also available in the Speakeasy Lounge.

Purchase tickets at www.milfordarts.org/about-us/tickets or call 203-878-6647, Tuesday- Friday 10- 5 pm.

The Live@theMAC series is sponsored by Berchem Moses, Attorneys and Counselors at Law.
