An American in Paris opened this week at The Bushnell in Hartford, Connecticut, bringing a mix of traditional ballet and modern musical to the stage.

Set in Paris as the Second World War comes to an end, the story revolves around a young French girl, Lise Dassin (Sara Esty) who longs to dance the ballet like her mother. But when she gets a chance of a lifetime, she begins to dwell on a new dilemma: her love life.

She is engaged to marry the wealthy Henri Baurel (Nick Spangler) but when she meets the charismatic American, Jerry Mulligan (Garen Scribner), everything changes. She's never felt passion like this before she encountered Jerry. But it's not only the passion for him that is enticing, it's her new enthusiasm for dancing, making for a difficult choice: does she do what's expected of her and marry a man she doesn't love, or go with her heart for a true chance of happiness?

With the musical acts of "I've Got Beginner's Luck," "Liza," and "Fidgety Feet," An American in Paris is an audience's dream. But top that with elegant ballet routines, impressive stage design, and a young love you're rooting for, this show is one that can't be missed.
