Author Paul Hendrickson to Speak at Fairfield University, 11/1
Paul Hendrickson, author of the award-winning bestseller "Hemingway's Boat," will read from his work and discuss his craft at 7 p.m., Thursday, November 1, at Fairfield University's Barone Campus Center Oak Room. Free and open to the public, the event is part of the Inspired Writer Series and is presented by the MFA in Creative Writing Program and the Department of English.
"Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life and Lost" traces Hemingway's exultations and despair – from his successful career to his 1961 suicide – and the one constant in his life, his beloved boat Pilar. The book won The Heartland Prize, was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist and was voted a best book of 2011 by Newsweek, the San Francisco Chronicle, Publishers Weekly, The Economist and the Chicago Tribune.
Publishers Weekly praised the book's unique style: "There's never been a biography quite like this one…. The stories are rich with contradiction and humanity, and so raw and immediate you can smell the salt air."
Henrickson is a prize-winning feature writer for The Washington Post and he teaches non-fiction writing at the University of Pennsylvania.
Fairfield University is located at 1073 North Benson Road in Fairfield, Connecticut. For more information on the Inspired Writer Series and the MFA program, visit www.fairfield.edu/mfa.
