Shadowbox Live is kicking off its popular musical series in its new home in The Shadowbox Live Building at 503 S. Front Street! And for the first musical production on the brand new stage, the troupe of metaperformers has chosen an audience favorite, The Rocky Horror Show!
"We first presented The Rocky Horror Show in the fall of 2006, and it was so popular, we ended up reviving it not even a full year later, in the summer of 2007," says Stev Guyer, Executive Producer and CEO of Shadowbox Live. "And ever since, people have been begging us to bring it back!"Audiences will get their wish on September 11th, when the cult classic musical opens at 7:00 PM, running Sundays only through November 13th. Although this is the third time Shadowbox Live has performed The Rocky Horror Show, theatergoers can look forward to a fresh revamp of the popular production."Don't come expecting the same version you may have seen elsewhere," says Guyer. "We're taking a darker, sexier direction with the entire design of the show, and have new costumes, new choreography to go along with the new stage and cast."
Instead of rehashing the classic look of The Rocky Horror Show that Shadowbox Live used in 2006 and 2007, Art Director Amy Lay wanted a more fantasy feel this time around."We decided to move away from the traditional look everyone expects and give it a brand new feel," says Lay. "We put together looks inspired by cirque and glam rock and wound up with a very creative design that really pops off the stage!"Shadowbox Live Choreographer Katy Psenicka, who received a nod from the Central Ohio Critic's Circle for her work on the 2006 premier, also decided to rework the vocabulary for her dancers. "As we discussed the production for The Rocky Horror Show, it became clear we wanted to venture away from camp and gravitate towards devilish and sexy," says Psenicka. "I started completely from scratch, and the new movement is less cartoony than before, but still very high energy and extremely fun to watch."
The show may have a fun and fresh look, but it's still The Rocky Horror Show after all, and audiences are encouraged to dress the part, shout out the classic callbacks, and dance in the aisles."We absolutely want everyone to participate!" says Guyer. "That's part of the charm of this show. There are a few rules limiting some of the traditional involvement, mostly to protect our equipment and actors, but we hope to see everyone in costume and on their feet for The Time Warp!"It's a cult classic with a Shadowbox Live spin. Break out your fishnets and pleather pants and join your favorite metaperformers for some titillating travesties in The Rocky Horror Show! The Rocky Horror Show opens September 11, 2011 at 7:00 PM and runs every following Sunday at 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM through November 13, 2011.
