MadLab Now Accepting Play Submissions for DIVIDE AND CONQUER

MadLab is now accepting submissions for its fall production of DIVIDE AND CONQUER. The submission deadline is August 29th, 2011. Submissions should be 40 minutes in length and be able to be easily broken in to four separate 10-minute segments with obvious starting/stopping points.

What is DIVIDE AND CONQUER?

Production Dates: 11/25-11/26 @ 8pm 12/2-12/3 @ 8pm 12/9-12/10 @ 8pm 12/16-12/17 @ 8pm

DIVIDE AND CONQUER marries theatre with Survivor. The production opens on Thanksgiving weekend on November 25th, 2011 and runs for 5 weekends on Fridays & Saturdays only, closing on December 17th, 2011. Continuing its penchant for audience participation, DIVIDE AND CONQUER opens with five 10-minute plays. At the end of the evening, the audience "votes off" their least favorite play, leaving only four plays to be produced the following weekend. On that following weekend, the audience will be treated to the next 10 minutes (as well as the first ten minutes) of each play for a total of four 20-minutes plays. As it progresses, in week three, there will be three 30-minute plays and in the final weekend there will be two 40-minute plays at which point the audience crowns the champion.

As a twist, there may actually be two champions. Even though the five plays presented on the first Friday (11/25) will be exactly the same as the five plays shown on the first Saturday (11/26), each nights votes will remain consistent with its day of the week. For example, if play #1 was voted off on 11/25, but play #5 was voted of on 11/26, the next week would see 2 different line ups of plays. We would see plays #2-#4 on 12/2 and plays #1-#4 on 12/3, thus creating two (possibly) different lineups from Friday to Saturday. Make sense? Don't worry. It doesn't really matter at this point anyway. We just need scripts.

How do I submit?

DIVIDE AND CONQUER is only available to Central Ohio playwrights.

Plays must be submitted via email in pdf or doc (not docx) format to andy@madlab.net no later than noon on August 29th, 2011. We know it's a confusing project and are more than happy to answer any questions or clear up any confusion.

How are scripts selected?

Scripts will be chosen by September 12th by MadLab's four co-Artistic Directors; Andy Batt, Michelle Batt, Stephen Woosley & Jennifer Feather Youngblood. Keep in mind that scripts will not be selected by the quality of the writing alone. Given the fact that each show will have 10 more minutes presented each week, the reading committee will also be evaluating how well the first, second, third & fourth ten minutes of the play start and finish and how easy it will be to create those "break points." Think of it as four separate chapters of the same book, except this is a play.
