About Sarasota Opera

Sarasota Opera, which owns its 1926 historic theater that was renovated in 2008, produces four operas in repertory from January to March, in addition to one opera and a Youth Opera production in the fall. Additionally, throughout the opera season, Sarasota Opera offers special events and concerts.



Position Summary

Sarasota Opera is seeking a full time seasonal stagehand to act as the Department Head for our IA props crew. The dates of our 2018-2019 season are Oct 1, 2018 – Nov 13, 2018 & Jan 3, 2019 – Mar 30, 2019. Additional work with IATSE Local 412 is available outside of the Opera season. We perform in “Rep” style so the applicant should expect night and weekend work and overtime.



Duties may include but are not limited to:

• Coordinate and lead all Load-in and change-over of prop elements for each production

• Create and maintain props for all Sarasota Opera productions

• Ensure the prop shop and work areas are clean and promote a safe working environment

• Lead the props run crew for all productions

• Assist in fulfilling all rehearsal props needs, and organize the transfer of all props between rehearsal spaces and the stage



Position Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge and skills

• A minimum of two years as department head or other leadership position

• Knowledge of Prop carpentry, furniture building and repair, scenic art, and machine/ hand sewing

• Computer skills including Word, Excel, Photoshop

• The ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds unassisted

• Excellent organizational and communication skills, and attention to detail





All Stagehands are currently required to join the IATSE Local #412 referral list and are subject to a collective bargaining agreement including work rules, pay scale and benefits.
