World Premiere Of CALLED HOME BY THE SEA Comes to Chicago

On The Spot Theatre Company presents Called Home By the Sea, a full-length dramatic romance in one act performed at the charming lakefront Berger Park Coach House Theater.

Called Home By the Sea is a world premiere drama set in the 1950's that combines realism with a hint of magic. This story of a young girl and her war-widow mother explores themes of love, loss, growing up, and beginning again. When twelve-year-old Annie gets into mischief in the East End of London, her mother, Molly, takes a job as cook in the Cornish town of St. Just-in-Penwith. Annie is at first not thrilled with her new home, nor with the innkeeper, Ben Treleyn, who seems rather taken with her mother. Then, she befriends Nora Grenlow, a reclusive old woman who lives in a stone cottage on the cliff edge by the sea. What secret is Nora keeping about her past marriage to the late Captain Grenlow? Is Nora really a mermaid, or is that just an idea from a child's dreams? And, when it comes to love, does the heart always know where it best belongs?

Artistic Director

Mike Brayndick, of On The Spot Theatre Company, began as resident writer at the Chicago Playwrights' Center with Fragments From the Permanent Collection, Connecting Flight, Anna Gerhardt, and In the Garden of the Prison, also broadcast on WJUF. His adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers toured England, and was performed at London's Bloomsbury Theatre. Smithsonian and Luce Foundation grants led to How to Make a Rainbow, developed at the Juilliard, and directed by Mike at the 2005 St. Ives Festival in the UK and the Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago in 2013. Also at the Greenhouse, On The Spot presented his adaptations of Turgenev's Home of the Gentry and Balzac's, Pére Goriot, as well as his drama, Pieces of Klee. Mike's comedies Only You Could Think That, What About Martha, All about Armando, Sex Lives of the Zebra Finch, Lost and Found, Lisette Dances Divine, and most recently the drama, Scenes for a Green World, have all been produced in Chicago by On The Spot.

Called Home By the Sea will be performed at the Berger Park Coach House Theater, 6205 N. Sheridan Rd., Chicago, starting on Thursday night, April 4th, running four weeks through Saturday night, April 27th. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm. Our preview performance is Thursday, April 4th, and official opening is Friday night April 5th.

Tickets are $20 General Admission with a Discounted $15 rate for seniors, students, industry, and groups. For the preview performance and all Thursday evening performances every seat in the house is $10.
