Village Players Set To Present Williams' SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER 5/1-5/17
Village Players presents Tennessee Williams' classic gem, Suddenly Last Summer, May 1 - May 17, 2009.
Set in 1935 New Orleans, wealthy matriarch Violet Venable anxiously awaits a confrontation with her dead husband's niece, Catharine, regarding the facts of her own son's death on the white hot streets of Cabeza de Lobo, Morocco. On the surface Catharine's story seems too outlandish to be true. To pacify Catharine's story Mrs. Venable has invited Dr. Cukrowicz, a young doctor who specializes in a new psychiatric procedure, lobotomy. At stake is Mrs. Venable's son's and the family's reputation in society.
Loosely biographical, Tennessee Williams tried to pacify his own demons regarding his own sister's experience with "experimental" psychiatric technique, many years previously. This simple one act play challenges our motives and the dark corners of our minds within the sometimes cruel eye of God.
Village Player's production features the kind of powerful cast that Village Players has become known for. Violet Venable is played by Ellen Peace, with her young foil Catharine being performed by Sarah Sapperstein, and Don Markus plays the fair Doctor Cukrowicz. Rounding out the cast is Karen Bronson as Catharine's mother Mrs. Holly, Ayal Stern as Catharine's brother George, and N.K Gutierrez as her nurse Sister Felicity. Nancy Andria plays Miss Foxhill, Violet Venable's personal assistant.
Suddenly Last Summer is being directed by Village Player's company member Scott Lee Heckman.
Suddenly Last Summer performs May 1 - 17, 2009. Fridays & Saturdays are at 7:30

Presented in the Blackbox Theater of the Village Players Performing Arts Center located at 1010 Madison St., Oak Park. Plenty of parking is available on the street.
