REMY BUMPPO PRESENTS CHICAGO PREMIERE OF

THE VOYSEY INHERITANCE ADAPTED BY David Mamet

Remy Bumppo Theatre Company presents the Chicago premiere of David Mamet’s sleek adaptation of The Voysey Inheritance by Harley Granville-Barker, running Sept. 18 through Nov. 2 in the Upstairs Mainstage of the Greenhouse Theater, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. Preview performances begin Thursday, Sept. 18 with opening night Sunday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 pm. The Voysey Inheritance is directed by Remy Bumppo Artistic Director James Bohnen, and features Artistic Associate David Darlow and guest artist Raymond Fox.

“Well, the more able a man is the less the word “honesty” bothers him… and Father was an able man.”—The Voysey Inheritance

The news is filled with stories of financial institutions going under due to unethical business practices. Mamet’s refreshing update of Granville-Barker’s 1905 play proves that’s nothing has changed over the past 100 years. When do-gooder Edward Voysey learns of generations of shady dealings within the family business, he is determined to set things right. But the rest of the family is decidedly against his plan. This insightful comedy intertwines the wit and passionate dialogue of George Bernard Shaw with the ethical conflicts of Arthur Miller.

The 2008-2009 Season is made possible by Chicago Community Trust, Prince Charitable Trusts, The Gaylord & Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, The Illinois Arts Council, The Jane Ellen Murray Foundation and by a City Arts Program 3 grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

Playwright Harvey Granville-Barker was a British producer, playwright, and critic. In 1901, he made his directorial debut with his very own, The Marrying of Ann Leete. He produced and starred in many of George Bernard Shaw's early plays (often directed by Shaw himself, though credit was given to Granville-Barker).  He also produced his own The Voysey Inheritance (1905) and Waste (1907). He influenced 20th-century theatre with his naturalistic approach to Shakespeare's plays, which stressed continuous action on an open stage and rapid, lightly stressed speech.

Adaptor David Mamet was born in Flossmoor, Illinois. An American playwright, screenwriter, and director, his dramatic style reflects the divided members of the lower-middle class. Rhythmical, absurdly fragmented, and often scandalous, Mamet’s use of language directly descends from the works of American writer Ernest Hemingway, Irish author Samuel Beckett and English playwright Harold Pinter. Other plays Mamet has written include; Sexual Perversity in Chicago, Duck Variations, American Buffalo and Glengarry Glen Ross. His films include The Verdict, House of Games, and Wag the Dog.

James Bohnen (Director) is artistic director and co-founder of Remy Bumppo Theatre Company where he has directed more than two-dozen productions.  This summer he directed and co-adapted Henry IV: The Making of a King for American Players Theatre in Spring Green.  James will direct Old Times for Remy Bumppo this spring.

David Darlow (Mr. Voysey) is an artistic associate of Remy Bumppo Theatre Company.  Recent Remy Bumppo acting roles include the Chicago premiere of Fiction, The Best Man and the American premiere of Power.  He also directed Remy Bumppo’s production of Mrs. Warren’s Profession. Other recent Chicago credits include Othello at Chicago Shakespeare and David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre at Goodman Theater.  His films include The Fugitive and Road to Perdition.

Raymond Fox (Edward Voysey) returns to Remy Bumppo where he has performed in Tartuffe, Money and Man and Superman. He is the recipient of a Joseph Jefferson Award for his direction and co-adaptation of The Old Curiosity Shop at Lookingglass Theatre where he is also an ensemble member.
