The Syndicate to Bring CIVILITY! to Hamlin Park Fieldhouse Theater This Summer

By:

This August, ensemble theater company The Syndicate will bring Civility! to the Hamlin Park Fieldhouse Theater in the company's first performance in Chicago.

Inspired by The Bacchae by Euripides, Civility! is the story of six women caught in the clash between a God and a King. The play smashes together Euripides's original characters with brand new ones, creating a visceral, fast-paced story about power, control, and the question: how do we live together?

The Syndicate is an ensemble theater company that cultivates women and queer actors, directors, playwrights, and producers. The Syndicate makes new plays using techniques from devised, physical, and dance theater. In their mission, the company states, "We rely on our shared values of effort, a willingness to lead and to follow, and diversity in both how we tell stories and whose stories we tell."

The seven members of The Syndicate live in five different cities around the world, and they come together to rehearse and perform several times a year in New York and Chicago. The Syndicate's work has been recognized by the 2016 Mabou Mines Resident Artist Program; the 2015 and 2016 Chicago Performance Lab; and the 2015 Resident Artist Program at The Brick, and this year, they were recipients of ART/NY's 2016 Nancy Quinn Fund. Their original plays include Civility! (The Brick); Graceful Exit (The Clemente/Mabou Mines RAP); Well Job Gertrude (Wild Project, Dixon Place); and Long Distance (performed in 2015-2016 in each city where a company member lives).

Civility! was presented as a work-in-progress as part of Siti Company's SITI Lab in October of 2014, and the company performed a sold-out run in January of 2015 in residence at The Brick in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The company will complete development of the piece at the Chicago Performance Lab at the University of Chicago this summer.

The Syndicate presents Civility! on August 11 and 12 at 7:00 PM at the Hamlin Park Fieldhouse Theater, located at 3035 N. Hoyne, Chicago, IL, 60618. Tickets are available at www.wearethesyndicate.com/civility. Civility! was created collaboratively by The Syndicate with company members Ellenor Riley-Condit as lead writer and Emily Spalding as director. Harrison Adams joins the team as Sound Designer, David Goodman-Edberg as lighting designer, and Sarah Stark as Stage Manager. The Syndicate is Alanna Coby, Janouke Goosen, Megan Hanley, Leigh Hendrix, Ellenor Riley-Condit, Emily Spalding, and Andrea Tzvetkov.
