"Be glad. The old man's dead."

What could be better on a chilly Monday night than sitting in an Irish bar downing a few pints? How about sitting at a wake in an Irish Bar downing a few pints?

Seanachaí takes its tradition of Irish storytelling back to its roots - with this evocative tale, performed in the back of a pub.

"The old dingleberry's dead," and through the fumes of beer and whiskey appear Fats, Bones, Beaky, Mumbles, Psycho, and Oscar. The gloves are off and everyone has a story to share. So pull up a chair and a jar and inhale the atmosphere as booze, insults, poetry and comedy fly in equal measure, and the portrait of "Our father: narrow-minded, wide-girthed, drunk as a stone" emerges with brutal force and acerbic flavor.

From the company that brought you the comedy of War and the kaleidoscopic Scenes from the Big Picture comes Our Father, a 'funny, fast and furious' hit that ran on Theatre Row, off-Broadway for five years.

Jeff Christian, director of Seanachaí's 2006 hit A Whistle in the Dark ('an astoundingly powerful piece of work'), helms this production with fellow ensemble members John Dunleavy, Michael Grant, Barbara Figgins, Dan Waller, Robert Kauzlaric and Kevin Theis, along with Shane Kenyon.

M.G. Stephens is the third of sixteen children, born to an Irish father and an American mother. He holds a doctorate in American Studies from the University of Essex, England. Other produced plays include Horse, Trill Is Gone, R & R, and Breezy Point, performed by the West Bank Players, the Working Theatre, the Ensemble Studio Theatre, and Pentameters Theatre.

Seanachaí is the Gaelic word for Storyteller. The people's stories were at the very core of ancient Irish culture. It was the duty of the Seanachaí to keep these stories alive. The mission of Seanachaí Theatre Company is to return theatre to this origin - by creating compelling productions and programs that focus the energy of artists towards the common goal of exceptional storytelling. To achieve this end, Seanachaí Theatre Company strives to provide an atmosphere where all theatre artists - actors, playwrights, directors and designers - have the support and assurance to collaborate openly. That is at the heart of all ensemble companies, and Seanachaí has proven itself a major player in Chicago's ensemble-driven theatrical community.
