Raue Center For The Arts is excited to welcome Step Afrika! to the stage. This unique performance from one of the top ten African American dance companies in the United States will leave audiences with their hearts pounding at 7 p.m. on January 17, 2018.
"Step Afrika! was one of the first groups dedicated to stepping and their shows are unique. In the past, Raue Center has featured similar groups that incorporated some of the individual aspects of the show: percussion, dance and acrobatics. But Step Afrika! will combine all of them to create a fun, high-energy night for the family," says Raue Center Executive Director, Richard Kuranda. "You will leave wondering how the group was able to do everything using just their bodies!"
Founded in 1994 as the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping, Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, African traditional dance and influences from a variety of other dance and art forms. The company's combination of technique, agility and pure energy makes each performance unique.
Step Afrika! performances are more than dance shows, integrating songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation. The company promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. It reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year through a 50-city tour of colleges and theatres and also performs globally as a cultural ambassador.
Tickets start at $20 and may be purchased online at rauecenter.org or via the Box Office. Tickets are $6 for students ages 18 and under and may be purchased via the Box Office at 815.356.9212 or 26 N. Williams Street in downtown Crystal Lake.
