BMI Harpoons The Band Freelance Whales at 'PIck' Showcase 1/20
Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), the American performing right organization that represents more than 400,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music and more than 6.51 million works.
BMI "Pick of the Month," a showcase series focusing on a band or artist. The monthly series is meant to help expose the performer to the music industry and public through a top quality venue and discounted admission. The cost for the January "Pick" is $12 advance, $15 day of show.
To call them multi-instrumentalists might be a little overdone. The kids in Freelance Whales are really just collectors, at heart. They don't really fancy buffalo nickels or Victorian furniture, but, over the past two years, they've been collecting instruments, ghost stories, and dream-logs. Weathervane, the group's debut LP, is swirling with organic and synthetic textures, interlocking rhythmic patterns, and light harmonic vocals. Since their brief residency at Staten Island's Farm Colony, Freelance Whales have taken to city streets, subway platforms, and stages across the U.S. and Canada with their swirling nostalgia.
Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Show begins at 10:30 p.m. at Mercury Lounge (217 East Houston Street, NYC, 10002)
