Photo Flash: Sneak Peek at Skidmore Theater's BIG LOVE

By:

The Skidmore College Department of Theater's Fall 2017 Mainstage production will be Big Love by Charles L. Mee, directed by Carolyn Anderson. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at the cast in costume below!

Synopsis: Written by two-time Obie Award-winning playwright Charles L. Mee, BIG LOVE fuses the ancient and the modern by bringing the plot of The Suppliants by Greek tragedian Aeschylus into the modern era. The story follows fifty sisters as they arrive in Italy, having fled Greece to avoid marrying their fifty cousins. Known for his adaptations of Greek plays, Mee uses the timeless themes of The Suppliants to raise issues of gender politics, love, and justice to a modern audience in this violent, musical, and comic production.

From director Carolyn Anderson: "By linking the world of ancient Greece to the 21st century, Charles L. Mee's Big Love challenges us to confront the most basic human questions and problems. As Mee says, 'I love the Greeks because their plays so often begin with matricide and fratricide, with a man murdering his nephew and serving the boys to their father for dinner. That is to say, the Greeks take no easy problems... They take deep anguish, and hatred, and disability and rage and homicidal mania and confusion, and aspiration and a longing for the purest beauty and they say: Here is not an easy problem; take all of this and make a civilization of it.' Charles L. Mee's Big Love is a comic and tragic view of love, life, and marriage. Mee's inspiration for Big Love, Aeschylus' The Suppliants, combined with his acute view of the contemporary world, places us right in the midst of the big questions that are central to who we are, today... 'What is Justice? Who is family? What is man? What is woman? What is it to be displaced? What is it to be 'other?' Funny and poignant, tragic and biting, Big Love takes us to those places that we avoid."

Tickets: $12 general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens. Reserve seats online at theater.skidmore.edu or by contacting boxoffice@skidmore.edu or (518) 580-5439.
