Oakland Symphony Orchestra Presents the 16th Annual David Daniels Young Artists Concert, 2/10

By: Feb. 05, 2013

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, the Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO) will present the 16th Annual David Daniels Young Artists Concert, which will feature the winners of the Oakland University Concerto Competition. The competition is open to all OU music majors.

Gregory Cunningham, conductor of the OSO, said, "The concerto competition is always fiercely contested and all of this year's finalists demonstrated great maturity, poise and artistry."

The winners of the concerto competition are piano major Joe Walters, violin major Emily Hudock, trombone major Luke Perzyk, and voice majors Nicolette Book and Chynna Roose.

All five students chose their pieces with great care, worked to perfect them for many months and will perform with passion, but Joe Walters' performance of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto in G Major will have special meaning for his family.

Joe Walters
Joe's first piano lesson was with his grandfather, Raymond Walters, who died three years ago. Raymond was working on this piece when, as a young man close to the age Joe is today, he was drafted into the army to serve in World War II. Joe is even working from his grandfather's musical score.

"It seems a fitting tribute to the legacy of music his grandfather provided Joe that he should perform this great work," said Joe's piano teacher Rebecca Happel.

The Oakland Symphony Orchestra will perform on the OU campus in Varner Recital Hall, which is surrounded by ample free parking. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map or by searching for "Varner Hall" on a smart phone.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased in advance with no service fees at startickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. They can also be purchased at the Center for Student Activities Service Window in the Oakland Center or at the Varner Hall Box Office. Complete ticket information is available at oakland.edu/tickets.
