Ailey II Dance Company Performs at the Emelin Theatre, 4/13

By: Mar. 26, 2012

World renowned dance company Ailey II returns to the Emelin Theatre with on Saturday April 13 at 8pm.  After a wildly successful sold-out performance in May 2010 at the Emelin Theatre, the Ailey II dance company will "once again delight audiences with some of the best young dance talent performing works by three outstanding emerging choreographers."

Board President Mark Ettenger remarks “We are thrilled to have a dance company of this caliber grace the Emelin Theatre stage. Over the past two years, the Emelin's focus has been to bring the best in dance to Westchester county with performances by the Paul Taylor Dance Company and Savion Glover, and now Ailey II.”

The evening performance includes three dance pieces:  Boulevard – a dynamic piece by choreographer Mina Yoo which references a familiar neighborhood on the “boulevard” where young people of various cultures and backgrounds interact; The Legacy of Inheritance -  a ballet that fuses European and American styles into a contemplative exploration of bodies in motion alongside the powers of nature with music by Zoe Keating and Stars of the Lid;  and Reference Point - a cutting-edge piece that combines ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance set to music by Mio Morales by Ailey II Artistic Director Designate Troy Powell.

Ailey II is universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the country's best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today's most outstanding emerging choreographers.  Alvin Ailey personally appointed former Ailey member, Sylvia Waters, as Artistic Director in 1974 and after 38-years as Artistic Director, she will pass on her mantle of leadership to Troy Powell.  Under Waters’ direction, Ailey II has flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the country, combining a rigorous touring schedule with extensive community outreach programs.
