Iconis, Jones & Stockstill Receive MAC Wallowitch and Burman Songwriting Awards

Composer-lyricist Joe Iconis, lyricist Kenneth Jones and composer Gerald Stockstill were honored with 2010 songwriting awards from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs.

At MAC's meeting Oct. 16 at the Metropolitan Room, Iconis was given the John Wallowitch Award, created to recognize talent under the age of 40. Jones and Stockstill were given the Dottie Burman Award for writers 40 and older.

Joe Iconic, is a two-time Drama Desk nominee and Long Island native. He is the recipient of the Ed Kleban Award, the Jonathan Larson Award, two Drama Desk nominations, and a 1992 Stratford Elementary School Excellence In Music Certificate. Joe is the author of BLOODSONG OF LOVE: THE ROCK'N'ROLL SPAGHETTI WESTERN (Ars Nova), WE ARE THE PEOPLE: AMERICA ROCKS!
(TheaterworksUSA). THE BLACK SUITS (SPF at the Public), REWRITE (Urban Stages/Goodspeed Festival of New Artists), THE PLANT THAT ATE DIRTY SOCKS (Theaterworks USA), and THINGS TO RUIN (The Zipper, Second Stage Theater.)

Jones and Stockstill are a songwriting team who met in the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. Their musical comedy NAUGHTY/NICE has been presented as a benefit concert and has undergone developmental readings in Manhattan. Their songs have been heard at venues like The Players Theatre, Joe's Pub, the Laurie Beechman Theatre, and the Zipper Theatre.

Stockstill's musical FOOD ON THE AISLE, written with lyricist-librettist Donna Kaz, was seen in the 2010 New York Musical Theatre Festival's developmental reading series. TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, his musical created with lyricist/co-librettist Amy Coady, was presented in the Kansas City Crossroads Musical Theater Festival. Stockstill has written songs with Roger Anderson, Sam Davis, Brad Ross and others and is managing editor of Playbill.com.

The awards came with a cash prize of $250. At the MAC ceremony, Iconis performed two of his songs while Cindy Marchionda sange two Jones and Stockstill numbers while Stockstill accompanied her on the piano.

The 2010 award selection committee included Adam Gwon (Fred Ebb Award & 2009 John Wallowitch Award winner), Brett Kristofferson (MAC, Bistro and 2009 Dottie Burman Award winner), reviewer and journalist Rob Lester, Thomas Honeck (MAC Award winner/booking manager of The Duplex) and special guest panelist Rick Jensen (five-time MAC Award winner, two-time Bistro Award winner).
