FRANK DAIN RETURNS TO THE CABARET STAGE! “THE MAGIC OF MATHIS” FOR FOUR SEPTEMBER SHOWS BREAKS THE SPELL
Frank Dain returns to the cabaret stage beginning Saturday with his first solo show in 13 years. In four performances at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, Dain premieres "The Magic of Mathis," bringing fresh interpretations to Johnny Mathis signature songs. Contributing creative arrangements is Dain's frequent collaborator, Musical Director Kathleen Landis. The multi-award winning director/entertainer Lennie Watts directs. Performances are Saturdays, September 8 & 15 at 7pm, and Fridays, September 21 & 28 at 7pm.
In addition to the milestones "Chances Are," "It's Not for Me to Say," "Wild Is the Wind," "Misty" and "The Twelfth of Never," "The Magic of Mathis" will also include infrequently sung gems, such as "99 Miles from L.A.," "Yellow Roses on Her Gown," "I'll Be Easy to Find" and "Photograph." All were part of Mathis's remarkable 56-year career.
Dain, the affable and unflappable editor-in-chief of Cabaret Scenes Magazine, has a substantial performing history as well as a popular and critically acclaimed recording to his credit. Of Dain's debut CD, "I Thought About You," Roy Sander thought, "One of the loveliest and most romantic recordings I've heard in years." Show Music declared the CD "... a thoroughly romantic affair, in no small part because of Dain's warmly expressive baritone."
After appearing in many regional and Off-Broadway productions, Dain made his New York City Town Hall debut at The Mabel Mercer Foundation's summer Cabaret Convention, and performed at the Foundation's first cabaret convention in Philadelphia at the Prince Theatre. As a solo act, he performed at Don't Tell Mama, Steve McGraw's, Danny's Skylight Room and Judy's. He was a frequent guest of Kathleen Landis during her residency as a pianist/singer at Café Pierre, and has appeared with her at the Cocktail Terrace in the Waldorf Astoria and for the Sheet Music Society." He and Landis recently concluded a 16-week run at Nino's Tuscany.
