Variety reports that actor Tommy Lee Jones is set to direct, write, produce and star in the upcoming period piece THE HOMESMAN.

THE HOMESMAN follows the story of "a pioneer woman and a claim-jumping rascal of a man (Jones) who usher three insane women on an odyssey from Nebraska to Iowa, braving the elements along the way." Jones will produce the film through The Javelina Film Company along with Michael Fitzgerald's Ithaca Films.

The actor made his directorial debut in 1995 with TNT's "The Good Old Boys." Jones starred in the film alongside Sissy Spacek, Frances McDormand and Matt Damon. His first feature film directorial debut was 2005's "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada." The movie received four Independent Spirit Award nominations as well as two awards from the Cannes Film Festival.

Jones most recently directed the HBO adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's play "The Sunset Limited". He was last seen on the big screen in "Captain America," and will star opposite Will Smith in the third installment of "Men in Black". Upcoming projects include "Hope Springs," opposite Meryl Streep and a starring role as Republican leader Thaddeus Stevens in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."
