Emmy winning actor Patrick McGoohan, creator and star of the iconic cult classic television show "The Prisoner," has died. He passed away in Los Angeles and was 80 years old.

McGoohan died Tuesday following a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said Wednesday. He is survived by his wife, Joan and two other children.

McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama "Columbo," and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart."

A veteran of much stage work, his only Broadway appearance was in Hugh Whitemore's 1985 play PACK OF LIES.  He received a Drama Desk Award nomination for his performance.

But he was best known and beloved as the title character Number Six in "The Prisoner," a ground breaking 1960s British series in which a former spy is held captive in a small village and constantly attempts to escape.
